Beat The Heat With Endura
With many Australian cities in the midst of a record breaking heat wave, the risk of dehydration is significantly increased.
Heat is a major stressor on our bodies and it is important during heat waves to be even more conscious of our hydration levels. This is especially important for those of us who work or train outside and are exposed to the often harsh elements. People aged over 65 years should also take extra care during hot weather as the elderly are more prone to heat stress than younger individuals.
Rehydration – It's About More Than Just Water
Sweating is the main way in which our body regulates its temperature. As things heat up, we sweat and this keeps us cool. Sweat is made up of primarily water and electrolytes and the hotter it gets, the more we sweat and the more water and electrolytes are lost.
Although drinking plain water helps to replace the body water we lose, it is not the best solution for rehydration – you need to replace your electrolytes as well.
Electrolytes are charged ions that regulate not only the hydration of the body, but also the blood pH and are critical for nerve and muscle function. The most physiologically important electrolytes are sodium, potassium and magnesium. Magnesium is a key regulator of the electrolytes and its function is vital in the prevention of muscle weakness and cramps, which, can occur during normal daily activities in extreme heat.
We also use, and therefore require more energy when we sweat, so adequate intake of carbohydrates for energy is vital during exercise and extreme heat.
A reduction in body water, electrolytes and carbohydrates, with an increase in body temperature during hot days and prolonged exercise will hamper energy levels, performance and may, in some cases, lead to dehydration and serious medical conditions such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Endura Rehydration contains a balanced mix of electrolytes and carbohydrates to help you stay hydrated when things really heat up.
