Exercise and Rehydration

Dehydration Affects Physical Performance and Wellbeing

Exercising for more than 90 minutes in temperate or warm environments may cause dehydration to the extent of 2% to 7% of body mass, which may result in a decline in physical performance. Declines in performance are linked to higher core temperature, heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion. Even moderate dehydration due to heat exposure or exercise has been shown to decrease alertness, concentration, tracking performance and short-term memory, as well as increasing tiredness and headaches in otherwise healthy individuals.

Endura is Superior to Water

Exercise results in loss of fluid, and electrolytes as sweat. Electrolytes are charged ions that regulate not only the hydration of the body, but also the blood pH and are critical for nerve and muscle function. The most physiological important electrolytes are sodium, potassium and magnesium. Magnesium is a key regulator of the electrolytes and it's function is vital in the prevention of muscle weakness and cramps. You also use up carbohydrates, which are burnt for energy. A reduction in body water, electrolytes and carbohydrates, with an increase in body temperature during prolonged exercise will hamper performance and may, in some cases, lead to serious medical conditions (heat exhaustion or heat stroke). It is recommended that during prolonged exercise, adults should consume fluids containing carbohydrates and electrolytes rather than water alone.

Endura: Scientifically Advanced Hydration

Dehydration leads to poor performance and to more serious conditions, such as heat stroke. For optimal hydration, water should be consumed with carbohydrates and electrolytes. By using Endura Rehydration Formula, you can ensure water absorption and retention are superior to water alone. The carbohydrates in Endura Rehydration Formula replace lost energy and improve performance. Sodium promotes active water consumption and the magnesium may prevent muscle cramps and weakness.

The Endura Advantage

  • Carbohydrate: Endura Rehydration Formula delivers rapidly absorbed carbohydrates for immediate energy and improved performance. The carbohydrates in Endura Rehydration Formula are delivered at a special concentration to achieve maximum fluid delivery. The combination of electrolytes and carbohydrates promote water absorption and retention.
  • Electrolytes: Ingestion of large volumes of plain water will inhibit thirst and will also to promote a diuretic response. To maintain active hydration Endura Rehydration Formula contains sodium and potassium to replace electrolytes lost in sweat.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium deficiency is very common and exercise increases magnesium loss. Research has shown that magnesium deficiency may reduce physical performance, exercise capacity and contribute to muscle cramps and weakness.8,9 A common side effect of magnesium supplementation is digestive upset. However, Endura Rehydration Formula contains a patented form of magnesium (MetaMag™) that ensures higher absorption and bioavailability with a low risk of adverse gastrointestinal effects. There are also many other additional benefits in taking Endura Rehydration Formula.

Over-indulging Over Christmas?

At this time of year, Endura Rehydration Formula can also be useful to help combat hangovers and dehydration due to excessive partying! Excessive consumption of alcohol and coffee may increase our susceptibility to dehydration and magnesium deficiency. As the party season comes to a close, many of us may find that we are indeed a little dehydrated and magnesium deficient! Just increasing our intake of water is often not enough. We need to ensure we are also getting electrolytes and key minerals like magnesium. This is where Endura Rehydration Formula can help, yet again! So remember to keep some Endura Rehydration Formula handy this summer.

"Hangover Proof" your body with Endura

By Allan Pitman - Triathlon Coach and Ironman Competitor

Let's have a Merry Christmas and avoid the traps many of our mates fall into. First trap is the Christmas party season. It's inevitable that we’ll have to go to several Christmas parties this season. Even though for many of my athletes, after finishing the big races of the 2008 year, the Christmas holiday period is an easy time. We usually treat it as an endurance building block, all low intensity.

We are people first and athletes second. That means being more socially active during that time. If you can't avoid having a Christmas drink or two, a little alcohol is not a bad thing. Most of us don't want to totally avoid drinking and the good news here is that it's possible to "hangover proof" your body before the parties. Most hangover symptoms are caused by dehydration, and who is better equipped to prevent dehydration than triathletes?

By loading on the afternoon before the party in the same way we would before a major endurance race, we can go into "the event", (The Christmas Party) fully hydrated. When we carbo load for an Ironman race we alternate between Endura Rehydration and Endura Optimizer throughout the day. Then first thing next morning after the big night, have a nice cold Endura Rehydration drink to replenish lost fluids and minerals.

By following a similar loading and rehydrating program, we're able to train right through the Christmas holiday period and be thoroughly prepared for the early 2009 season races.
